I’ve heard stories. Too many stories:
- A woman at a wedding show told me she sent an e-mail to a “photographer” asking for boudoir photos & they told her they don’t do sessions with plus size women because they won’t look good. *insert extra angry face here*
- Instagram message asking for info because she spent $300 and: “just got my images back from — and hate them! I’m not ordering a single photo.”
- A woman came to my open house & booked a session after telling me a story about her previous boudoir session. The whole time she’d been e-mailing the photographer’s female assistant. Turns out it was a male photographer. Nothing against male boudoir photographers, but it comes off a little creepy when a photographer isn’t up front about who they are BEFORE the photo shoot.
- An e-mail asking if I photograph plus size women because she’s been told that other photographers don’t & asked me to be honest on whether they’d turn out well or not.
- A client of mine had a session where the photographer stopped in the beginning of the session to tell her she wasn’t posing right & that they should just stop now. She said she cried the whole way home.
These are breaking my heart people!
First & foremost, I have NEVER EVER turned a woman away. I think you all are beautiful. I love proving it to you. I love seeing the confidence grow in my clients. I wholeheartedly love my job.
I was so scared to jump into boudoir photography. It’s a HUGE responsibility. You know how hard women are on themselves. We’re sooo rough on ourselves, then I’m over here going to take pictures of you in your underwear. So I studied.
I studied ways to pose women, found resources on picking outfits/lingerie, practiced, and so on. I keep evolving, trying new poses while keeping the tried & true poses. That’s really what it’s about. Posing & good clothes. I’ve spent 5 years posing women of all sizes.
Let me tell you, posing for boudoir is so very different from all other types of photography. I was a wedding photographer, I did a couple family sessions, & even one newborn session (never again, those are a whole other ball game too)! You can have all of the pretty lighting, backgrounds, lingerie, etc. However, if the posing isn’t flattering, the photos are going to fall short.
I ended up cutting out weddings so I could focus on boudoir & put my whole energy into helping women feel beautiful. Doing that has been the best thing that has ever happened to my business! I’m able to put 100% of myself into your sessions, creating an experience that is just for you.
This is why, when choosing your boudoir photographer (to get back to the title of this blog) I highly recommend looking at their work. Comparing work more than pricing. Asking to see sessions with all different women if they don’t have them readily available to look at. I know pricing is a hard thing to overlook. Boudoir photography is a luxury, but it’s worth it.
YOU are worth it!
